We all love quick, easy throw-together meals. As mums, it’s easy to feel like getting dinner prepared at the end of the day becomes a struggle, and if your partner (or you) are working too you’ll both want to have a dinner planned which doesn’t require much thought or effort at the end of the day. Here, we’ve searched the web for a few top-notch freezer meals which are perfect whether you have a baby on the way, or are a mum already! If you’re not a mum, these are great ideas for how you could possibly prepare some meals for other mum’s in your community too! We’re sure they’ll be highly appreciated.
Freezer meals are the definition of thrown-together, effortless and simple dinners. If you have a crockpot at home, this will be even easier - as a lot of these ideas are made with a slow cooker or a crock pot in mind.
How to Prepare your Frozen Meals:
Check out some of the recipe ideas we have below or give yourself 5 minutes to do a quick search on Pinterest for some recipe ideas. Remember, there are a few ingredients that don’t freeze well: lettuce, cucumbers, bean sprouts, and raw potatoes are a few. Egg and dairy-based products often don’t do too well during the thawing process either so try to avoid these! Once you’ve prepared your grocery list, head to the store and grab your ingredients. If you’re planning on preparing a lot of meal, look for sales at large bulk stores like Bin Inn, Pak n Save or even just meat specials at your local supermarket. Frozen meals are a great opportunity to take advantage of meat sales without stocking your freezer of meats with no meals in mind.
To store your frozen meals, we recommend large Glad Bags which are easy to label with the ingredients or cooking instructions. They’re freezer safe, microwave safe and last well in the freezer. It also makes it super easy to store your freezer meals flat.
If you’re preparing a slow cooker meal or any meal which simply consists of throwing all the ingredients together into the pan, then feel free to store all the ingredients in one glad bag. It seems a little odd to be putting raw meat in with vegetables and sauces, however, this is completely safe as the food will be completely cooked through during the slow cooking process.
We recommend putting your ingredients in the following order:
1. flavour boosters: garlic, ginger
2. chopped vegetables
Remember, label your freezer meal bags clearly with the ingredients, cooking requirements and a date. Freezer meals should be consumed within 3 months of being stored.
When you want to put your freezer meals, thaw the freezer bag in the fridge and then add to the crockpot or pan. If you’re using an instant pot, thawing isn’t necessary. Remember to put your frozen meal out of the freezer in the morning and to put it on to cook during the morning/afternoon so it’s ready in time for dinner. Trust us, this little bit of forward-planning is the only thing you’ll have to fuss over.
