Don’t let the pressure of maintaining a steady supply of breastmilk stress you out! These Lactation Bliss Balls are the perfect snack for busy, breastfeeding mums. They are really quick and simple to make (they use only two bowls!). They also store well and can even be kept at your bedside for a midnight breastfeeding snack! They’re super nutritious, sugar-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free too! Check out this delicious recipe below!
For those mums who desire to breastfeed their children, sometimes the pressure to maintain a steady supply can be a demanding task. Not to mention having to maintain a calorie-intake high enough to feed both mum and bub! However, I can understand that mums have plenty more to think about than dedicating their limited free time to experimenting with baking or researching lactation tips, so here’s a quick blog post and a recipe for all the new and breastfeeding mums out there!

First up, when looking for recipes to assist in your milk supply, what are the key ingredients to look out for:

The substances known to help boost milk supply are called ‘galactagogues’. You can find this in foods, herbs and even prescription medications. However, if you’re looking for a super natural source, look out for the following foods:

1. Flaxseed (Note: this is best when you buy whole flaxseed and specifically grind your desired quantity right before using it or up to 3 days before)
2. Brewer’s Yeast (Note: this isn’t gluten-free!)
3. Oats (Note: if you’re gluten-free, oats are okay. Technically oats are gluten free but can be contaminated during production because of their proximity to wheat products. If you’re coeliac or seriously gluten intolerant substitute the oats in the following recipe for more ground flax seed or look for specifically labelled 'gluten-free' oats)
4. Raw nuts

If you’re unable to find Brewer’s Yeast at your local supermarket, check out your local Bin Inn as they are likely to stock it! All the other key ingredients should be easily found at your supermarket.

We’ve combined flaxseed, oats and raw nuts in the following recipe to provide you with a gluten, dairy and sugar-free alternative to Lactation Cookies!

If, however, you aren’t gluten-free and wish to give a Lactation Cookie recipe a try I highly recommend checking out these cookies by the Crazy Outdoor Mama

If you are concerned about your breastmilk supply or find that these lactation bliss balls aren’t assisting. Seek help from a breastfeeding expert!
We highly recommend La Leche League!

Here are some other tips to help boost your milk supply:
  • eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet, most importantly fuel yourself well at breakfast!
  • hydration is key: keep a water bottle with you and try to sip frequently
  • try fennel tea: or roasted fennel is also delicious - this is another great ingredient to support your supply. Here’s a recipe from Nadia Lim for a Fennel and Honey Milk Drink
  • offer the breast more frequently: they say demand equals supply. This means that if the baby latches or sucks on the nipple it sends your body a message to produce more milk

Lactation Bliss Balls

Prep Time 15 minutes
Makes 18 bliss balls

1 cup dates
1/3 cup oats
1/3 cup whole flaxseed
1 tbsp honey (or maple syrup)
4 tbsp nut butter (I used peanut butter however, almond butter is amazing!)
1/3 cup cashews
1/3 cup walnuts
1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
1 tbsp sunflower seeds
5 brazil nuts

In a small bowl, place the dates and cover with warm water. Leave for 10 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients. Using a nutribullet (I used my Isagenix Blender) grind the whole flaxseeds then add to a food processor with all the remaining ingredients. Once the dates have softened, drain the excess water and add to the food processor. Pulse the food processor until just combined, then let run on low until a crumbly dough forms.

Form the balls by rolling tablespoon-sized quantities. Store in an airtight container in the fridge, or near your breastfeeding chair. These would also be delicious rolled in coconut if you desired!

Note: the reason we recommend grinding flaxseed fresh before use is to activate the flaxseed and enable you to reap the best nutritious benefits!

Be sure to let us know if you try these bliss balls! We’re grateful for all feedback on our blog posts and would love to know if you have enjoyed or tried this recipe!

Also, if you’re a young mum and would love us to write or share about a certain topic please let us know! We love being able to support the mums in our community!
