If you’ve never heard of them, then let this be your formal introduction to keystone habits. They’re the fundamental habits to your daily life which have a positive flow-on effect into a multitude of other areas. These habits aren’t complicated either, they’re simple actions which are easy to implement yet are gifts that just keep on giving. Check out the full blog post below!
You’ll have habits in your life which you can easily identify as ones which make a significant impact on how good your day goes, or how prepared you feel when you arrive at work or how easily you’re able to fall asleep at night. These are the gems throughout your day that help ensure everything else falls into place. However often in our own failure to recognise these habits, we may let important keystone habits slip away unnoticed and suddenly we’re getting ourselves into bad routines and are left wondering where it all went wrong.
There isn’t anything complicated about keystone habits so no need to worry! It’s more about being consciously aware of them and ensuring that you implement them into your day!
The concept of keystone habits can be read about more in the book ‘The Power of Habit’ by Charles Duhigg. He pens keystone habits to be the key of getting what you want out of life. It doesn’t take as much energy as transforming the entirety of your routines either, it just takes one simple habit.
Why They Work
The great thing about keystone habits is that they encourage you to maintain good habits in other aspects of your life. Getting up in the morning and making your bed right when you get out is a great example. While initially, your goal is to just make your bed in the morning that instant feeling of accomplishment sets great intentions for the day ahead. As a result, you leave the house already having made an impact, the room looks tidier, and despite how little the task seems, it feels good to make that small impact. When you get home at the end of the day, you’re walking into a clean environment which encourages you to leave the work day behind you and just look after yourself. You instantly see the trickle-down effect of this simple habit throughout your day. You quickly realise how easy it is to make a positive change which affects your whole life.
Keystone Habits For You
Here are some common examples of keystone habits, you may recognise that you’re doing some of these already!
To identify other keystone habits on your own, ask yourself ‘what action do I know has positive flow on effects for me?’
The book ‘The One Thing’ written by Gary Keller explains keystone habits in an even broader sense. Gary believes that keystone habits exist in so many more areas of our lives than just our personal lives. You may identify keystone habits in your finances, your spiritual life, physical health, your key relationships, your job or even your own business.
These days, everyone is telling us what we should be eating, how we should be spending our every moment and persuading us to buy their products to help with it. Isn’t it refreshing to hear that just by focusing on one thing we can positively impact so many other areas of our lives.
Once you’ve identified your keystone habits, in whatever categories you find most affective, support yourself in accomplishing that ‘one thing’ during your day. This may involve slipping it into your morning or evening routine or setting reminders on your phone to remind you of it throughout the day. I know that if I make sure I’m drinking enough water during the day I’m preventing a migraine in the afternoon, my skin thanks me and I don’t hit the wall at 3pm. So I love setting myself a visual goal, like finishing 3 full drink bottles and mental reminders throughout the day via my phone to keep sipping.
What is your ‘one thing’ that has positive flow on affects throughout your life?
