We understand how difficult it can be to maintain a GF/DF diet while traveling. So we wanted to create this series to clue you in on our favourite cafes and restaurants which offer GF/DF options or allow you to customise your order accordingly. First up, is NEO Cafe & Eatery located on Willis Street in Wellington CBD. This was the highlight of our trip to Wellington last October and definitely needs to be added to your list of places to check out!
On our recent girl’s trip to Wellington, we didn’t realise that our most inconvenient item of baggage would be our diets. Staying in a CityLife apartment smack bang in the middle of the CBD, we had always assumed that a quick lunch would just require a trip in the lift and a little walk. However, we were extremely disappointed with the available gluten and dairy free options at the local cafes - in the cabinets and on the menus. The most memorable of which was in David Jones. After drooling over gorgeous clothing, cosmetics and accessories, we found ourselves being lead upstairs towards the in-store cafe. Our stomachs, growling with intent, we were sharply disappointed when the cafe menu offered no gluten free or diary free items - let alone a guide or key on the menu in sight. We approached the counter with little hope left, “gluten and dairy free?” we whimpered. “Ahhh, that’s a shame.” She replied, shocked at her rudeness we hustled away to find another spot. Our sorrow (and hunger) was broken when we stumbled upon a little gem nestled on Willis Street merely a 10 minute walk from our apartment. The menu was decorated with labels and we were even more impressed by the quality of service if we wished to order something that wasn’t usually one of their GF/DF meals.
For myself, ordering the Egg and Bacon Butty our waiter simply catered to my needs by removing the butter from my toast - gluten free toast I might add. For Morag, he adapted her Veggie Brekkie to have mushrooms rather than a hash (containing cheese) and remarked “I’m thinking roast tomatoes would be gorgeous with that.” In a flash our meals were made to order. We were seriously fulfilled by our meals and were able to continue on our day fuelled, and content that we had maintained our diet well.
The name, Neo is alluding to the owner’s Greek heritage. The waiter explained that in Greece, Neo was the local cafe or eatery of the area. Also meaning ‘new’ or ‘one’, it seemed like the perfect way to align the cafe with both the heritage of the family and the uniqueness of the cafe itself.
Be sure to check out Neo when you are next in the area. Trust us, you will not be disappointed.
